He is both discreet and media-savvy, depending on the needs of the case.

Neil cares about people and is committed to protecting their struggle for justice. He became an attorney because he believes the government can easily abuse its power. Through zealous representation, Neil tries to help normal people caught up in a system that can be frightening.

Neil also assists other lawyers on large and complex cases outside their expertise. He has managed litigation across multiple platforms and courts, including teams of lawyers in different locations and across international borders.

Cases

COVID-19 litigation. When the pandemic struck, many of Neil’s clients were locked up in prisons where social distancing was near impossible. Neil worked with other lawyers to try to get the courts to order systemic changes to protect people in prisons. To view the amicus brief Neil co-authored, see http://www.courts.wa.gov/content/Briefs/A08/983178%20Amicus%20-%20SEattle%20Chapter%20of%20National%20Lawyers%20Guild.pdf

Neil also filed a motion for compassionate release for someone serving a five-year sentence for federal drug charges who was incarcerated in a federal prison in California that was ravaged by COVID-19. When the judge initially denied the motion, Neil filed a motion for reconsideration and the judge finally released Neil’s client from prison.
