Accused of terrorism in federal court. Neil represented a woman accused of eco-terrorism for the arson of a university research facility. She faced a federal minimum mandatory sentence of 35 years. The jury hung on the most serious charges at trial, but convicted the defendant of arson, for which she received a six year sentence. Because of legal errors by the trial judge to which Neil objected, the conviction was reversed on appeal. The defendant then pled guilty and received a four year sentence (with credit for the time she had already served).
